Yebisu Beer 1893
Yebisu Beer with a renewed label design in 1893
From museum plaque:
"In the 1890's when Yebisu Beer was launched into the market, small breweries were being build throughout Japan, with the number said to be 100 or 150. However, the majority of them disappeared after a few years, perhaps due to bad quality. Unlike these breweries, Yebisu Beer invited a brew master from Germany and all brewery equipment -- including mash kettle, steam engines and ice machines -- were imported from Germany. Yebisu Beer was especially popular among foreign people familiar with the original taste of beer, and a newspaper article from that time noted, "It [Yebisu Beer] affected the sales of foreign beer [in Japan, which was popular at the time].'
